Using Adobe Illustrator to Make Personalized Keychains
February 28-March 2, 2018
Adobe Illustrator is a vector graphics editor that unlocks an unlimited realm of FabLab Laser Etcher based projects from making personalized acrylic key chains, to engraving glassware and etching printed circuit boards. As an introduction to the software students made from scratch keychains featuring text or images of their choice. The keychains required a precise set of specifications teaching students how to control the exact dimensions of their projects as well as using the laser for both cutting(vector) and engraving(raster).

STEM: Straw Tower Challenge
Students were asked to design and construct a tower made of coffee stirring straws. The tower had to be strong enough to hold at least one golf ball, but this was just the beginning of the challenge, awards were given for the tallest tower and the strongest tower. The tallest tower measured 28 inches tall. While the strongest tower was not as tall, it held 6 golf balls, a stapler, and a phone. During this project students took on the role of project manager, architect, engineer, and information manager.
Testing for Nutrients-Soil Sample Lab
In preparation for the Fall growing season on the Phoenix Education Farm, students conducted a hands-on experiment to determine soil fertility. In small lab groups, students chose a location on the farm they hypothesized to have nutrient-rich soil. After collecting a small soil sample, students then tested the sample for the basic growing nutrients, Nitrogen(N), Phosphorus, and Potassium, as well as pH. Groups will contribute their results to an overall soil map of the Phoenix Education Farm.
Model United Nations Week
During Model United Nations Week, students are assigned a country to research and act as a delegate in United Nations General Assembly. This week's Model UN simulation included real-world solving to save the world from a global zombie pandemic. Model United Nations teaches researching, public speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities.
